The 2011 tax holiday for Tennessee will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 5 and end at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, August 7. Qualifying purchases made in-store, by mail, telephone, email, or Internet during this first weekend in August will be exempt from state sales tax if bought for personal use.
Three categories are listed for the Tennessee tax break with the following price limits per item:
- Clothing $100
- School supplies $100
- Computers $1,500
Items Qualifying for Tennessee Tax Free Days in 2011
Clothing purchases that will be exempt from state sales tax include, but are not limited to:

- Accessories such as belts, bow ties, suspenders
- Antique clothing (wearable)

- Bathing suits, swimsuits
- Boots (general purpose, hiking, cowboy)
- Bridal apparel such as bridal gowns and veils, formal apparel (including prom dresses and tuxedos), graduation caps and gowns
- Coats, raincoats, ponchos, coveralls, shawls, wraps, overalls, ear muffs, leg warmers
- Religious apparel such as choir and altar clothing and clerical vestments
- Hats (cowboy, baseball, knit, rain), caps
- Neckwear (ties, bow ties, scarves)
- Pajamas, night gowns, night shirts, robes
- Shirts, sports jerseys, pants, jeans, skirts, shorts, dresses
- Shoes, overshoes, rubber shoes, flip flops (rubber thongs), sandals, inserts, shoelaces, slippers, socks

School supplies that will be exempt from state sales tax include, but are not limited to:
- Backpacks, book bags, lunch boxes
- Calculators, compasses, protractors, rulers
- Glue, glue sticks, paste, cellophane tape, scissors
- Notebooks, composition books, legal pads, folders, sketch pads, paper, index cards, poster board

- Pencils, pens, pencil boxes, pencil sharpeners, chalk, glazes, crayons, highlighters, erasers
Computers qualifying for the tax exemption have a $1500 limit and must include a central processing unit (CPU). Additional items may be bundled with the personal computer sale, such as keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers, cables, and basic software.
